Recent illustrations done for my calendars and poetry project

For the poetry project (@picnicpoems), I decided to go with a more abstract-looking style. I was inspired by Fauvism and Impressionism, especially artists like Henri Matisse. There are so many ways to personally interpret a poem, and I felt like the art style would go well with this ambiguity.

My calendars (@totteoki.design), on the other hand, continue to have a whimsical style that is soft and child-like. There are moments of overlap between the two styles, but for the most part the subjects in my calendar illustrations are clearly defined and less abstract. I tend to gravitate towards objects that, put together, evoke a sense in time and a feeling of coziness.

Be Bright Quiz Icons

A local coffee roaster needed illustrations for an onboarding coffee quiz for their website. Their branding is bold, commercial, and camp-inspired. Their branding manual clearly defines typefaces, colors, and patterns, but doesn’t really have guidelines on illustration style.

Illustrations can strongly evoke (or take away from) branding, so I made sure to have a few conversations with the owners on their original vision. I also combed through their brand moodboard thoroughly as part of the ideation process.

Below are the different styles I came up with for the quiz drawings. They range from flat icons, to rougher sketches, to colorful and playful shapes. I felt like the simpler outlined drawings matched the bold and minimal branding, while the colorful and playful drawings conveyed the “brightness” and “friendliness” of the brand that might not completely come through from the typefaces and patterns on the website.

In the end, we decided on the happy medium of the two sides of the spectrum — #5, “Retro Flat Drawings”. They are clean and minimal, while still retaining personality and color. Below are some of the final drawings in full color and texture. It was fun to find ways to convert well-known objects like a coffee pot or french press into reduced lines and geometric shapes/curves, while also creatively interpreting open-ended prompts like “bright and lively” or “fruity and floral”.

We decided that for the quiz itself, we would keep the icons without texture, and only with two colors. The owners also asked for the lines to be thicker so it would be easier to quickly view the icons. Here is a full list of those icons:
